When Jin Renqing stepped down for what the Chinese government claimed were “personal reasons” at the time, there was widespread speculation that he it was in fact for his indiscretions. A U.S. diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks confirms this information stating that he was fired for having a sexual relationship with a suspected Taiwanese spy.
The reported affair occurred during the administration of Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian, when bilateral tensions were high because of Beijing’s anger over Chen’s pro-independence policies.
The cable from the U.S. consulate general in Shanghai was dated Sept. 20, 2007. Investigators suspected that the mistress was not just a “social butterfly,” but a professional foreign spy. They now believe she was a Taiwan intelligence operative.
Taiwan’s intelligence agency declined to comment Monday.
